Obama Baby Boom???

Today I read part of an article talking about a possible baby boom say in about 9 months from election night.  Apparently the excitement of the evening continued once people went back to their own houses.  It will be interesting to see what happens in the upcoming months to see if this theory holds.  What is ironic to me is that Obama is so strongly pro-abortion that I wonder if instead of a baby boom, will we see an abortion boom?  Just curious….

Boomtown

Boomtown by Nowen N. Particular

I have to admit that of all the books I have reviewed for Thomas Nelson, Boomtown was the one I was looking forward to the most.  I loved the cover design and the cleverness of the author’s name.  I was intrigued by the story line as well.  Unfortunately, once I started reading the book, the only word that came to my mind was painful.  Three main things stick out in my head.  The first is that the author writes from the point of view of the pastor, yet this book is written for young boys.  I feel the book really loses an aspect of appeal with this point of view.  It is difficult for a young boy to relate to the pastor’s concerns, struggles and perspective. For example, Pastor Button finds out his son is making a rocket in science class, rushes into the classroom and demands that his son come home with him that very moment.   As a teacher of middle school students, I know that his actions would be extremely embarrassing to any young boy. My second main objection is the development of the plot.  The actual story line is very slow, clouded by numerous side stories that obscure the flow.    I feel sort of like what I imagine I would if I had ADHD – constantly sidetracked by yet another thing - so much so that I can’t focus on the important.  My final objection is the underlying theology present in the book.  One example is on page 79.  Pastor Button is praying on behalf of the town football team and says, “Whatever you can manage, that would be fine”.  Now, I’m not sure God cares about football scores and who wins and loses but I do know that God can manage whatever He wants not just what He hopefully can do.

Cruel and unusual punishment is…

. . .watching your daughter get shots.  Today Abby had her 6 month check-up.  All is well and she is growing right along the curve.  She weighed in at 12 pounds, 12 ounces and her length was 24 inches.  She was all smiles until the end.  The nurse came in to give the shots and this time asked me to hold down Abby’s hands.  Now that’s CRUEL!  Abby looked at me with such a confounded expression like “how could you do this to me?”   She’s been quite fussy all afternoon and actually sleeping a lot!  I pray that she is able to sleep well tonight.

One thing that bothered me was that they popped the question of do I want to give a flu shot to Abby?  I am a bit leery of flu shots in general let alone in such a little girl.  I asked if there were side effects, etc but nothing out of the ordinary.  I wish I had had time to check it out myself.  I found out that there is mercury in a lot of the flu shots out there and that is what is bad for little ones.  But just as in the past, I can not panic.  God is in control and faithful with my family.

Holding Fast

Holding Fast: The Untold Story of the MOUNT HOOD Tragedy by Karen James

Holding Fast

Rating: ★★★★½

Karen James recounts an honest and vulnerable tragedy in the James family.   The gripping account of her husband, Kelly along with his climbing partners, Brian and Nikko, was fascinating.  I am a fast reader but even so, I finished the book with remarkable speed.  Mrs. James was able to put pieces of the puzzle together of the climbers last days here on earth.   The determination of the climbers even as they faced death in the face was inspiring.  These were not amateur climbers but very methodical and took risks seriously.

Post Election Reflections

I recently read Eric Redmond’s post on Justin Taylor’s Blog and I commend it to you to read, it really puts things in perspective.

As Christians our response to any election (whether our candidate won or not) is to pray.  We need to pray for our President, and the rest of our government.  Obama may be the most liberal president that we have had in a long time.  He is one of the biggest proponents of abortion that have come to power.  Our national sin and shame of abortion will continue under this new administration.  We must pray. 1 Timothy 2:1-6, 8 says; “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth . . .  I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling” (ESV).

We must pray for President-elect Obama, not that he would come up with policies that we agree with, but ultimately that he would trust in Jesus Christ for his eternal security, because his trusting in Christ is what will have the affect of also changing his heart.

Romans 13 tells us that all authority comes from God.  We must remember also that God was not surprised by the outcome of this election.  Let us give the government the honor that it is due from God and pray for the leadership in our land.

Homemade baby food

So those that know me know that I can be cheap.  Not all the time.  For example, I am using disposable diapers instead of cloth diapers.  Probably only because I only have access to a washing machine once a week but I must admit that I like using disposable.  You only have to deal with the “yuck” once.  So I’ve been researching making my own baby food because I just can’t stomach the idea of buying those jars of preservative rich baby food.  I’ve also been to enough baby showers where you have to smell and taste to guess what the food is.  Gross!!!   I am also a control freak.  I want to know what I am really feeding my baby.  So yesterday was my first attempt to mass produce some baby food.  I steamed carrots in the new steamer bags (awesome by the way since to get the most nutrients don’t cook veggies in water).  Then I added a bit of water and blended it into a smooth texture.  Next I filled an ice cube tray with my carrot mush and froze them overnight.  This morning, they popped right out and I placed them in good freezer bags.  Now when I want Abby to have some carrots, I just take a carrot cube out and let it defrost.

My next goal is to start making my own rice cereal.  Something just makes me cringe about the packaged cereal that I buy.   Eventually, Paul and I would like to purchase the Nutrimill which would let us grind our own wheat and anything else such as rice to make nice rice flour.  We’ll have to save up for that or maybe we’ll get enough Christmas money for that

Book Reviews

Thomas Nelson Publishing is trying a new form of advertising.  They will send you a free copy of a new book in return for a published review on your website as well as amazon.  Apparently this is MUCH cheaper and hopefully more effective means of advertising than typical means.  My first book is in the mail.  Review to come soon.

Voting

The election is just 3 days away.  I have been thinking a lot these past few weeks about the implications of this upcoming election.  What does this mean for our country, our economy, etc.?  The conclusion I have come to is that it does not matter one way or the other what happens.  What I mean by that is that God is sovereign over all things and that of course includes our upcoming election.  “Our God is in heaven! He does whatever he pleases!”  (Psalm 115:3)  Our duty then is to vote, but we need to keep in mind that God himself is deciding the outcome. All government is ordained by God. “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” (Romans 13:1). What that means is that we need to be concerned about our country, but we don’t need to be anxious over it. We might disagree with our government, we might not like their policies or the direction they go, but they are still God’s ordained.  Our focus instead needs to be on the Kingdom of God and our Lord Jesus Christ, our affections need to be there, not be here in this world.  We should not be interested in advocating for political parties, we should be interested in advocating for the Gospel of Jesus Christ, who is our true king.

John Piper recently wrote a blog on Desiring God that I think hits it on the head, here is an excerpt (click here for the full article):

“Christians should deal with the world. This world is here to be used. Dealt with. There is no avoiding it. Not to deal with it is to deal with it that way. Not to weed your garden is to cultivate a weedy garden. Not to wear a coat in Minnesota is to freeze—to deal with the cold that way. Not to stop when the light is red is to spend your money on fines or hospital bills and deal with the world that way. We must deal with the world.

But as we deal with it, we don’t give it our fullest attention. We don’t ascribe to the world the greatest status. There are unseen things that are vastly more precious than the world. We use the world without offering it our whole soul. We may work with all our might when dealing with the world, but the full passions of our heart will be attached to something higher—Godward purposes. We use the world, but not as an end in itself. It is a means. We deal with the world in order to make much of Christ.

So it is with voting. We deal with the system. We deal with the news. We deal with the candidates. We deal with the issues. But we deal with it all as if not dealing with it. It does not have our fullest attention. It is not the great thing in our lives. Christ is. And Christ will be ruling over his people with perfect supremacy no matter who is elected and no matter what government stands or falls. So we vote as though not voting.

By all means vote. But remember: “The world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever” (1 John 2:17).”

Let’s vote, but not be anxious about the outcome.  Vote as if we are not voting.

As a side note: As we think about the sovereignty of God over the government, we should have an Old Testament perspective.  There were good kings in the Old Testament and bad kings, but God is still sovereign and ultimately, our King is Jesus, not matter who is elected on Tuesday.
